Many patients have a hard time thinking ahead, and putting together their personal will. This is the time to make your wishes know. Important decisions should be made now, rather than later, when others may have to make the decisions for you.
The first step is to get organized. Gather together vital records, such as birth certificates, and insurance policies, in one place, or leave instruction for others to access these records in the case of death.
Discuss with your lawyer what decisions should be made regarding your will. The other important document to organize and discuss with your attorney is power of attorney. If you become ill enough that you are unable to make decisions regarding your property, the person you name as power of attorney will bear that responsibility for you. Discuss with this person your wishes in the event of life saving procedures, such as life sustaining aid to help breathing, and/or kidney function.
