The vermiculite mine located in Libby, Montana, may be the most notorious mine in Northern America related to asbestos & vermiculite. Normally vermiculite is a perfectly safe substance used in many products worldwide. However because of the unique soil formation in the earth around Libby, the vermiculite is grossly tainted with asbestos fibers.
In 1990 the mine was closed after testing revealed the high levels of asbestos found in the soil. It had been in production from 1920 until 1990 where it produced most of the world's supply of vermiculite. If you find that a product you are using contains vermiculite, it is probably safe enough to not pose a significant health risk to you. Some vermiculite may still contain asbestos, so it is best to exercise caution when handling vermiculite related products.
Some common products containing vermiculite include, potting soil, insulation for buildings, and even some types of fertilizer.
