Living With Cancer | Sharing Diagnosis | After Treatment | Quality of Life | Caregiving | Family & Friends
When a friend or family member breaks the bad news that they have cancer, the rush of emotions will be intense. It is normal to have rather selfish emotions, while wanting to help your loved one. Here are some ways to handle the bad news:
Listening can allow your friend or family member to express what is happening physically and emotionally, and help you to understand what they might need from you.
If you are having a hard time offering consolation, it's alright. Accept what you are able or not able to do.
Relay to your friend your love for them, and offer him/her support.
Don't ask for more details then your friend is willing to give. Talking about it may be very difficult for them, and being brief may be all they can offer. They may also want to go into great detail.
Offer help where needed. Keep offering.
