Living with Cancer - Sharing Diagnosis
Their support will help you cope with the illness you are dealing with.

Living With Cancer | Sharing Diagnosis | After Treatment | Quality of Life | Caregiving | Family & Friends

It is difficult to share news with family and friends, especially while going through the shock and emotions from learning of the diagnosis yourself. Some patients may feel the need to keep the pain of the news from their loved ones, by not sharing their diagnosis. It is important to have support around you, and for your loved ones to know what is going on. Their support will help you cope with the illness you are dealing with.

Perhaps the most difficult discussion to be had will be with a spouse. For this person the burden may be just as reeling as it is for the victim. You may find it useful to have another person help you share the news with your family. For instance your doctor could be available to explain details that may be difficult for you to relate. People need to be warned of bad news up front, to prepare themselves beforehand. Set aside a time to meet with them, and be brief in your explanation, unless they indicate they want more information. It is important to explain to children up front what is going on. They should not find out by overhearing conversations, or hearing from a third party.
