It is generally really good news to start your treatment out with surgery. The best odds for a cure, are to have it surgically removed. After surgery other treatment may also be recommended, if the cancer is not fully removed. While discussing surgery with your doctor, come prepared with questions pertaining to the procedure.
Who will operate?
Where will the surgery be performed?
How long does the procedure take?
How many times has the surgeon performed this type of surgery?
What is involved in the testing beforehand?
What complications might occur?
What is expected after surgery?
How will pain be managed?
After your operation you will probably be monitored in the hospitals intensive care unit (ICU). If surgery was successful with little or no complications you can expect to be taken to a regular hospital room within the first 24 hours. Lung Cancer surgery patients are usually in the hospital from 4 to 7 days. Some patients stay longer if infection develops.
